Boulder City is a city in Clark County , Nevada , United States . It is on the Arizona border near the Lake Mead Recreation Area , about 30 kilometers from Las Vegas . Boulder City has its own airport, Boulder City Municipal Airport . It owes its origin to the construction of the Hoover Dam . In 2014 the city had a population of 15,386 people.
The Nevada Solar One solar thermal power plant , which went online in 2007, is located near Boulder City .
history
Boulder City was originally built by the Bureau of Reclamation to serve as a settlement for the workers who built the Hoover Dam . The city was designed by landscape architect Saco Rienk DeBoer . The sale of alcohol, union membership and all forms of gambling were prohibited in the city. The bureau did not give up control of the city until 1958. Boulder City was officially constituted as a city on January 4, 1960 and the city council named Robert N. Broadbent as its first mayor. The city's statutes, adopted by the residents, prohibit gambling within the city limits; this rule still exists and Boulder City is the only other location in Nevada besides Panaca where gambling is illegal. The sale of alcohol was permitted in 1969.

The city has a total area of 524.9 km², up to 100 hectares only land areas. Boulder City is the largest city in Nevada and 35th in the United States . Boulder City keeps its growth under tight control and issues a maximum of 120 building permits annually. Hotels can have a maximum of 35 rooms.

Demographics
The United States Census 2010 counted 15,023 residents who lived in 6,385 households and 4,277 families. The population density was 28.5 / km². There were 6,979 housing units at an average density of 13.3 / km². The population was 94.54% White , 0.71% African American , 0.72% Native American , 0.71% Asians , 0.16% Pacific Islanders , 1.27% of any other race, and 1.88 % said they were of two or more races. Hispanic or Latino were 4.34% of the population.
There were children under the age of 18 living in 23.6% of households and married couples lived together in 55.8% of households, 7.4% of households had a female householder without a husband present, and 33.0% of households were non-families. 27.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.1% of all households had a person aged 65 years or older living alone. The average household size was 2.3 and the average family size was 2.79 people.
The age structure of the population consisted of 20.4% under 18-year-olds, 5.3% between the ages of 18 and 24, 21.3% between 25 and 44, 29.3% between 45 and 64 and 23.7% were 65 Years old or older. The median age was 47 years. For every 100 women there were 97.8 men. For those over 18, the ratio was 100 women to 96.0 men.
The average income per household was 50,523 US $ and the average income per family was $ 60,641 US. Males had a median income of $ 42,041 versus $ 30,385 for women. City administration
Boulder City has a special statute and is administered by a five-person city council, which includes the mayor who chairs the city council. The city council appoints a city manager who carries out the decisions and instructions of the city council.

Boulder City has four public schools. Boulder City High School has 700–750 students in grades 9 through 12. Garrett Middle School serves grades 6 through 8, King Elementary School has grades 3 through 5, and Mitchell Elementary School covers the lowest grades. Boulder City also has a branch of the Community College of Southern Nevada .
Attractions
The proximity of the Hoover Dam is reflected in the center of Boulder City; the Boulder Dam Hotel is named after the dam's previous name and is home to the Boulder City / Hoover Dam Museum . The local Chamber of Commerce also uses the dam for advertising and the city hosts an annual short film festival called the Dam Short Film Festival .
