Sign pointing to economic history on an old department store

Panaca was founded by Mormons in 1864 . The village was formerly part of Washington County in the US state of Utah . But since the border was moved in 1866, Panaca has belonged to Nevada.

Panaca used to produce charcoal for nearby Bullionville (now a ghost town). The economy consists mainly of agriculture. Panaca and Boulder City are the only two towns in Nevada where gambling is prohibited. Panaca is also the only dry town in all of Nevada where the sale of alcohol is prohibited.

The place is traversed by US Highway 93 and is the starting point of Nevada State Route 319 in the direction of Utah with continuation in Utah State Route 56 from Modena . Lincoln County Airport is 3 km west of Panaca , a small airfield for general aviation with around 1000 aircraft movements per year (as of 2008).

Local attractions include Cathedral Gorge State Park 2 miles northwest on US Highway 93.
