Germany

The market volume in Germany was around 34 billion euros per year from 2014 to 2017. It is estimated that similar sales will be achieved in the years up to 2022 . Around half of sales are achieved with home furniture.

The German market is highly SME-shaped and about 75% of sales are of medium-sized enterprises achieved. The market leader in Germany is a Dutch foundation that operates under the brand name Ikea . Ikea (2017 sales approx. 4.87 billion euros) benefits from a global presence and can control the shopping market much better than medium-sized companies. Only the Austrian furniture company XXXLutz is comparable to Ikea in terms of market position and success .

The number of furniture stores has been falling since 2000; H. the market power moves from the medium-sized companies are increasingly in the direction of the industry giants. At the same time, an increase in sales outlets can be seen , which indicates a slow progress in the market shakeout. This adjustment can also be seen in the market structure, as more and more market shares are found in companies whose annual turnover is over 50 million euros.

Unlike the Primus Ikea, the industry giants XXXLutz and Höffner are growing mainly through company takeovers . At the same time, the product structure on the markets is shifting to an "egg timer", where there is a wide cheap and an equally wide premium segment, but only a narrow band in the middle price range can be found.

Like many other sales markets, the future of the furniture trade will be increasingly influenced by online trade , although the effects cannot yet be foreseen. In a market analysis from 2012, the following trends and developments are predicted:

  • the ongoing market adjustment will lead to even greater concentration
  • the presentation of goods is becoming increasingly important as a sales argument
  • Training and qualification of the sales staff is particularly crucial for the success of furniture that requires intensive advice
  • small dealers only have to specialize in a niche market
  • The demand must be based on clearly defined target groups align
  • Price wars do not create a lasting market advantage

qualification

Various skills and specialist knowledge are sought and required in the furniture trade. In retail areas often act furnishing consultants with different qualifications for sleeping, living, kitchen and bathroom. In assembly, the craftsmanship and skills of joiners and joiners are still in demand, while in the rest of the supply chain the logistics professions are important, i.e. retail clerks , warehouse logisticians and drivers in the furniture haulage .

The pressure for target group-oriented presentations also makes the industry increasingly interesting for show advertising designers and other creative professions.
