Washoe County is a county in the US state of Nevada . The county seat is Reno . Washoe City was the administrative center from 1861 to 1871 .

According to the United States Census Bureau , Washoe County's area is 16,968 square kilometers; 541 square kilometers of this is water.

The county had a population of 339,486 people as of the 2000 census . There were 132,084 households and 83,741 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 80.41% White, 2.09% African American, 1.82% Native American, 4.28% Asian, 0.46% Pacific Islander, and 7.67% other races Groups; 3.28% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 16.58% percent of the population.

Of the 132,084 households, 31.10% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 47.90% were married couples living together, 10.30% were single mothers. 36.60% were not families. 27.00% are single households and 7.70% have someone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.09.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.90% residents under 18 years of age, 9.80% between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.00% between 25 and 44 years of age, 23.80% between 45 and 64 years of age 10.50% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 102.80 males, for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 101.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 45,815 , and the median income for a family is $ 54,283. Males had a median income of $ 36,226 versus $ 27,953 for females. The per capita income was $ 24,277. 10.00% of the population and 6.70% of families are below the poverty line. 12.20% of these were under 18 years of age and 6.20% were 65 years of age or older.
