Fly Geyser

The Fly Geyser , also known as Fly Ranch Geyser , is a man-made geyser in Nevada . It is located about 20 miles (32 km) north of Gerlach in Washoe County .

Emergence

The geyser is the result of an incorrect drilling . Several wells were drilled in the area in 1964 in search of geothermal energy . The borehole was not properly closed. Water rose and raised minerals that were deposited at the exit of the borehole. As a result of this continuous process, the cone and the rock around the geyser continue to grow. In the meantime he has reached a size of 1.5 m. Running water, which covers an area of 30 hectares, has formed a terrace landscape over the years .

The different colors are a result of the many minerals. Microorganisms, algae and other plants also color the surface. In the meantime, a small ecosystem has formed in and around the geyser, as the owners have released small fish into the resulting terraces.

The geyser is located on private land owned by the Burning Man Project and is open to the public after registering with the associated farm. Other lesser known geysers are nearby.
