Sparks is a borough in Washoe County in the US state of Nevada with a population of almost 100,000 ( US Census Bureau 2016 estimate ).
location
Sparks is on the Truckee River near the California border . The Great Basin extends to the east and the Sierra Nevada mountain range begins to the west . The community forms a single urban agglomeration together with Reno, which adjoins it to the southwest .
Interstate 80 runs through the city .
history
The area was once inhabited by Washoe Indians . In 1904 a town was founded on the Truckee River in the wake of the railway construction. It was initially named "Harrimann" after Edward Harrimann, the president of the railroad. It was later renamed "Sparks" in honor of Governor John Sparks .

Sparks is located in the Washoe County School District and currently has two high schools, three middle schools and 15 elementary schools , as well as 3 private schools. The private schools are the Christian Elementary Schools, Legacy Christian School, Excel Christian School and the Lamplight Christian School.
Shootout on October 21, 2013
On October 21, 2013, two people were killed and two others were life-threatening injured in a shooting on Sparks Middle School campus. The shooting occurred at 7:50 am local time in the playground of Sparks Middle School. The 14-year-old perpetrator died during his act, along with his victim, math teacher and former US Marine Michael Landsberry.
