William McAleer

William McAleer (born January 6, 1838 in County Tyrone , United Kingdom , †  April 19, 1912 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1901 he twice represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1851, William McAleer, born in what is now Northern Ireland , came to Philadelphia with his parents, where he attended both public and private schools. Ten years later he became a partner in the flour trading company John McAleer & Sons , which his father and brothers ran. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1871 and 1873 he was a member of the Philadelphia City Council. He was also president of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick organization , which served immigrants to the United States. McAleer also served on the Board of Guardians of the Poor between 1873 and 1898 , which campaigned for those in need. He became president of that body over time. In 1880 he became a director at the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. Between 1886 and 1890 he was a member of the Pennsylvania Senate .

In the congressional election of 1890 McAleer was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Richard Vaux on March 4, 1891 . After re-election as an independent candidate, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1985 . In 1894 he was not re-elected. In 1896 he was re-elected as a Democrat in the second district of his state in Congress, where he replaced the Republican Frederick Halterman on March 4, 1897 , who had succeeded him two years earlier. After being re-elected, he could remain in the House of Representatives until March 3, 1901. During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . In 1900 he was not re-elected.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, William McAleer resumed his previous activities. He died on April 19, 1912 in Germantown , a borough of Philadelphia.
