Horace Chilton (born December 29, 1853 in Tyler , Texas , USA , † June 12, 1932 in Dallas , Texas, USA ) was an American politician in the US state of Texas.

Early life

Horace Chilton was born on December 29, 1853 to George W. Chilton and his wife Ella at Tyler. First, Chilton was taught by his mother in the home study until it from the age of 10, in 1863, the Charnwood institutions attended, and later a semester at the Lynnland institution in Glendale ( Kentucky graduated). Chilton trained as a typographer and published since 1871 an almost weekly newspaper he Tyler Sun called. He later studied law and began practicing in Tyler.

Political career

Between 1881 and 1883, Chilton became the Texas Assistant Attorney, representing Texas at the Democratic Convention in both 1888 and 1896 . It was the Texas Governor Jim Hogg who approached Chilton and asked him to take over his vacant Senate post after the resignation of US Senator John Henninger Reagan in 1891. So it was that Chilton moved to the US Senate on June 10, 1891, and remained in office for nine months. It was Roger Quarles Mills who ousted Chilton in a specially scheduled election and took the Senate post on March 22, 1892. Two years later, in 1894, Chilton first ran an election campaign for the Senate seat, and on March 4, 1894, succeeded Senator Richard Coke . This time he remained in office for six years - the full legislative term - and on March 3, 1901, after a lost election, he had to give up his place to the newly elected US Senator Joseph Weldon Bailey .

Late life

Chilton returned to Tyler, where he resumed his work as a lawyer. In the fall of 1901 he moved to Beaumont , where he became head of Governor Hogg's office in the local oil fields. In 1906, after Hogg's death, Chilton moved to Tyler again, but stayed there only briefly, since he settled in Dallas that same year. He spent the last two and a half decades there, and died there on June 12, 1932. His grave is in Oakwood Cemetery , Tyler.

He had five children with his wife, Mary W. Grinnan, who had married Chilton on February 20, 1877.
