Tony Fruscella
Tony Fruscella (* 4. February 1927 in Orangeburg , New Jersey ; † 14. August 1969 in New York City ) was an American jazz trumpeter of the bebop and hard bop . He played his instrument (similar to Chet Baker ) "with a lot of air."
Life
Fruscella played with Phil Woods in high school and briefly with Charlie Barnet after military service . Then in the first half of the 1950s with Lester Young , Gerry Mulligan ( Newport Festival 1954) and Stan Getz . The highlight of his musical work is the only album released under his own name for Atlantic Records in 1955 with Chauncey Welsch , Allen Eager and Danny Bank . In addition to the saxophonists Eager and Brew Moore, he also played frequently with the cornetist Don Joseph . After that he was no longer musically active: alcohol and drug addiction ruined his health and prematurely ended his career. Most recently he was often in hospitals or in prison. He died of cirrhosis of the liver.
Fruscella was married to actress and singer Morgana King .
