George Franklin Huff
George Franklin Huff (born July 16, 1842 in Norristown , Pennsylvania , † April 18, 1912 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1911 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives several times .
Career
George Huff attended the public schools in Middletown and later in Altoona . At the age of 18 he started working for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Altoona . In 1867 he moved to Westmoreland County , where he worked in the banking industry in Greensburg . He later became involved in industry and mining in the western part of his home state. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . In June 1880 he took part as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago , at which James A. Garfield was nominated as a candidate for president. Between 1884 and 1888 he was a member of the Pennsylvania Senate .
In the 1890 congressional elections , Huff was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the 21st constituency of Pennsylvania, where he succeeded Samuel Alfred Craig on March 4, 1891 . Until March 3, 1893 he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . In the elections of 1894 Huff was re-elected to Congress in the state-wide 29th district of Pennsylvania, where he replaced Alexander McDowell on March 4, 1895 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1896, he could only spend one legislative period in the US House of Representatives until March 3, 1897.
In the elections of 1902 , Huff was re-elected to Congress in the 22nd district of Pennsylvania to succeed John Dalzell . After three re-elections, he was able to complete three further terms there between March 4, 1903 and March 3, 1911. From 1907 he was chairman of the mining committee. In 1910 he renounced another candidacy.
After his time in the US House of Representatives, George Huff was no longer politically active. He died on April 18, 1912 in the federal capital Washington. Huff had been married to Henrietta Burrell since 1871, with whom he had eight children. He was also a member of the elite South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club , which included numerous prominent Pennsylvania millionaires. This club owned the South Fork Dam and its reservoir, which broke in 1889 and caused a flood disaster with many deaths.
