Luther F. McKinney
Luther Franklin McKinney (born April 25, 1841 in Newark , Ohio , † July 30, 1922 in Bridgton , Maine ) was an American politician . Between 1887 and 1889 and from 1891 to 1893 he represented the state of New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives . He also served as the United States Ambassador to Colombia from 1893 to 1897 .
Career
Luther McKinney attended both public and private schools in his home country and then worked as a teacher himself. During the Civil War he was a soldier in a cavalry regiment from Ohio between August 1861 and February 1863 . In 1865 he moved to Iowa , where he worked in agriculture and as a teacher until 1867. He then studied until 1870 at St. Lawrence University in Canton ( New York ). In 1871 he moved to Bridgton, Maine, where he was ordained minister and pastor of the Universalist Church of America . In 1873 he moved first to Newfields and in 1875 to Manchester , New Hampshire. In both places he was active as a clergyman.
McKinney was a member of the Democratic Party and ran for a seat in Congress for the first time unsuccessfully in 1884 . Two years later he was elected to the US House of Representatives in the first district of New Hampshire, where he succeeded Republican Martin Alonzo Haynes on March 4, 1887 . Since he lost to Alonzo Nute in the elections of 1888 , he was initially only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1889. In 1890 McKinney was able to regain his old seat in the House of Representatives, whereupon he spent another term in this chamber between March 4, 1891 and March 3, 1893.
In 1892 McKinney renounced another candidacy for Congress. Instead, he unsuccessfully applied for the office of governor of New Hampshire: He was defeated by the Republican John Butler Smith . Between 1893 and 1897 he was US ambassador to Colombia during the second presidency of his fellow party member Grover Cleveland . On his return to the United States, he moved back to Bridgton, where he got into the furniture business. Between 1907 and 1908 he was an MP in the Maine House of Representatives . He then returned to pastor his church in Bridgton. Luther McKinney died on July 30, 1922.
