Thomas McKey Edwards (born December 16, 1795 in Keene , New Hampshire , † May 1, 1875 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1859 and 1863 he represented the state of New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Edwards initially enjoyed a private education and then studied until 1813 at Dartmouth College in Hanover . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1817, he began to work in Keene in his new profession. Between 1818 and 1829 he was also a postman in this place. Between 1834 and 1839 he was a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives . In 1845 he gave up his legal practice; for this he got into the railroad business. He oversaw the construction of the Cheshire Railroad and became its first president. He also became president of a bank and a fire insurance company.

Edwards became a member of the Republican Party . In 1858 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third district of New Hampshire , where he succeeded Aaron H. Cragin on March 4, 1859 . After a re-election in 1860, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1863 , which were overshadowed by the events of the civil war. In Congress, he saw the departure of the delegates from the southern states who joined the Confederation .

In 1862 Edwards renounced another candidacy. After serving in the House of Representatives, he resumed his previous activities. Thomas Edwards died on May 1, 1875 in his home town of Keene, where he was also buried.
