Charles Humphrey Atherton

Charles Humphrey Atherton (born August 14, 1773 in Amherst , Hillsborough County , New Hampshire Colony , † January 8, 1853 ) was an American politician . Between 1815 and 1817 he represented the state of New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Atherton attended the public schools of his home country and then until 1794 Harvard University . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1797, he began to practice his new profession in Amherst. Between 1798 and 1807 he was a registrar at a probate court. Politically, Atherton was a member of the Federalist Party .

In the congressional elections of 1814, which were held nationwide, he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC for the second mandate from New Hampshire . There he took over from Samuel Smith on March 4, 1815 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1816, Atherton could only hold one term in Congress until March 3, 1817 .

Atherton was an MP in the New Hampshire House of Representatives from 1823 to 1839 . He also worked as a lawyer again. He died on January 8, 1853 in his native Amherst. Charles Atherton was the father of Charles G. Atherton (1804-1853), who sat twice in the US Senate for the state of New Hampshire between 1843 and 1853 . The son was also a member of Congress for New Hampshire from 1837 to 1843.
