Carol Shea-Porter (born December 2, 1952 in New York City ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . She has represented the 1st congressional electoral district of the state of New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives since 2017 , which she represented from 2007 to 2011 and from 2013 to 2015. She will not stand for re-election in 2018.

Family, education and work

Carol Shea, her maiden name, attended Oyster River High School in Durham (New Hampshire) until 1971 . She then studied at the University of New Hampshire until 1979 . She then went on to work as a social worker and headed related facilities in New Orleans and Maryland . She also helped out in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina .

Carol Shea-Porter is married to Gene Porter. The couple live in Rochester .

Political career

After her victory in the 2006 congressional elections in New Hampshire's first constituency , she entered the US House of Representatives in Washington . There she took over on January 3, 2007, succeeding Republican Jeb Bradley , whom she had beaten in the election. After re-election in 2008 , she resigned from Congress on January 3, 2011 after losing to Frank Guinta in the 2010 election . During this time Shea-Porter served on the Armed Forces Committee, the Education and Labor Committee, and the Natural Resources Committee. She was a member of two sub-committees in each of these committees.

In the November 2012 election , she was able to regain her previous seat against Guinta, so that on January 3, 2013 her second mandate in Congress began. Since she lost again to Guinta in the November 2014 election , she resigned from Congress on January 3, 2015 .

In the 2016 election she prevailed in another electoral duel with Guinta and has been a member of the US House of Representatives since January 3, 2017. On October 6, 2017, she announced that she would not apply again in the following election in 2018 , but would withdraw from politics; Her mandate ends on January 3, 2019. Her seat is one of the most competitive in the country: Shea-Porter just won there with a two percent advantage in 2016 , while Republican Donald Trump was ahead in the simultaneous presidential election , while Democrat Barack Obama Had won in 2008 and 2012 .

Positions

Shea-Porter is considered to be politically left ( American : "liberal" ) and supported demands for a timetable for troop withdrawal from Iraq after the Iraq war . She also campaigned for minimum wages and supported President Barack Obama's health care reform (“ Obamacare ”).
