George W. Morrison

George Washington Morrison (born October 6, 1809 in Fairlee , Vermont , †  December 21, 1888 in Manchester , New Hampshire ) was an American politician . Between 1850 and 1851 and again from 1853 to 1855 he represented the state of New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Morrison attended the common schools and the Thetford Academy . After that he worked as a teacher himself for some time. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1835, he began his new profession in Manchester.

Morrison was a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives in 1840 and 1841 . Between 1845 and 1849 he served as district attorney in Hillsborough County ; from 1849 to 1850 he was a member of the State Senate . After the resignation of Congressman James Wilson , Morrison was elected as his successor in Congress in the necessary by-election in the third constituency of New Hampshire . There, between October 8, 1850 and March 3, 1851, he ended the legislative period of his predecessor. But since he lost in the regular congressional elections of 1850 to Jared Perkins of the Whig Party , he had to resign from Congress in March 1851.

In the congressional election of 1852 he was re-elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the second constituency of New Hampshire . There he took over from Charles H. Peaslee on March 4, 1853 . Since he was unsuccessful in the election of Mason Tappan from the American Party in 1854 , he could only spend one legislative period in the House of Representatives until March 3, 1855, which was determined by heated discussions, above all about the question of slavery .

After his tenure in the House of Representatives, George Morrison worked as a lawyer until 1872. Then he retired. He died on December 21, 1888 in Manchester and was buried there.
