Eugene Elliott Reed
Eugene Elliott Reed (born April 23, 1866 in Manchester , New Hampshire , † December 15, 1940 there ) was an American politician . Between 1913 and 1915 he represented the state of New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Eugene Reed attended the public schools in his home country, but at times also received private education. He also studied law. In the years that followed, Reed became a successful businessman. He has been a director and board member of numerous construction companies in New England and New York . In addition to these activities, Reed also began a successful political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1899 and 1903 he was a city councilor in Manchester and from 1903 to 1911 he was mayor of his hometown. For twelve years he served on both the Democratic National Committee and the state board of his party. In 1908, 1912, 1916 and 1924 Reed was a delegate to the respective Democratic National Conventions . In 1910 he ran unsuccessfully for the congress for the first time .
In 1912 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the first district of New Hampshire . There he took over on March 4, 1913, succeeding the Republican Cyrus A. Sulloway , whom he had defeated in the election. But since he lost to Sulloway in the following elections in 1914, Reed was only able to complete one term in Congress until March 3, 1915. During this time the 16th and 17th amendments to the Constitution were discussed and ratified in Congress. After the end of his time in Congress, Reed was appointed by US President Woodrow Wilson to the American delegation for the administration of the Philippines . There he was Minister of Trade and Police in 1916. It was then that he also became the first President of the Manila City Railways . After his return to the United States in 1918, Reed ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate : he was defeated by Republican Henry W. Keyes .
Between 1919 and 1922 Eugene Reed worked in the export trade in New York City , and from 1922 to 1931 he was Vice President of the insurance company United Life & Accident Insurance Co. in Concord . In the years 1933 and 1934 he led the charge of New Hampshire Department of National Recovery Administration , which is part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt launched the New Deal -Programms to overcome the Great Depression was. From 1934 to 1939 Reed held other offices in reconstruction organizations. He was the head of the Federal Housing Agency for New Hampshire and served as the director of the National Emergency Council for his state. Reed died on December 15, 1940.
