Ossian Ray (born December 13, 1835 in Hinesburg , Vermont , †  January 28, 1892 in Lancaster , New Hampshire ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1881 and 1885 he represented the state of New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Ossian Ray came to Irasburg , Vermont when he was a child . There and in Derby he attended public schools. After a subsequent law degree and his admission to the bar in 1857, he began to practice in Essex County and Coos County in this profession. Since 1854 he was based in Lancaster. Between 1862 and 1872 he was a district attorney in Coos County.

Ray was a member of the Republican Party . He was a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives in 1868 and 1869 . In 1872 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia , on which US President Ulysses S. Grant was nominated for a second term. Between February 1879 and December 1880, he succeeded Joshua G. Hall as a federal attorney for the district of New Hampshire.

After the death of Congressman Evarts Worcester Farr , Ray was elected in the necessary by-election in the third district of New Hampshire as his successor in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC . There he ended between January 8 and March 3, 1881, the beginning of his predecessor's legislative period. Since he was also elected to Congress for the following legislative period , he was able to represent his constituency there until March 3, 1883. At that time this district was dissolved. Therefore, Ray ran in the elections of 1882 in the second district. After a successful election, he was able to take over the mandate held by James F. Briggs on March 4, 1883 and spend another term in Congress until March 3, 1885. In 1884 he renounced another candidacy.

In the following years, Ossian Ray did not hold any higher political office. He died in Lancaster, where he lived in January 1892, and was buried there.
