Martin Alonzo Haynes

Martin Alonzo Haynes (born July 30, 1842 in Springfield , Sullivan County , New Hampshire , † November 28, 1919 in Lakeport , New Hampshire) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1887 he represented the state of New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1846 Martin Haynes moved with his parents to Manchester , Hillsborough County . There he attended public schools. He then completed an apprenticeship in the printing industry. During the Civil War he was a soldier in the Union Army. In 1868 he moved to Lakeport, where he founded the Lake Village Times newspaper, which he ran for more than 20 years.

Haynes was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1872 and 1873 he was a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives . From 1876 to 1883 he was employed in the court administration in Belknap County . He was President of the New Hampshire General Veterans Association in 1881 and 1882. He was also a member of the Union Army's Association of Civil War Veterans ( Grand Army of the Republic ). For this association he also headed the district of New Hampshire from 1881 to 1882.

In 1882, Haynes was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the first district of New Hampshire , where he succeeded Joshua G. Hall on March 4, 1883 . After a re-election in 1884, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1887 . In the elections of 1886 Haynes was defeated by the Democrat Luther F. McKinney . Haynes worked for the tax authority between 1890 and 1893 and from 1898 to 1912. In the meantime, he helped set up a tax system in the Philippines . Martin Haynes died in November 1919 in Lakeport and was buried there.
