The well sanctuary ( Italian Pozzo sacro ) on the Cuccuru Nuraxi (also called Kukkuru Nuraxi ) is located near Settimo San Pietro north of Cagliari in Sardinia . The nuragic fountain is located on a hill (southwest of Campo Sportivo) which is marked by a metal cross. The complex includes the ruins of a nuraghe , in connection with the fountain and its temple, with a favissa (pit for depositing cult objects that have become unusable). It was excavated by Enrico Atzeni between 1960 and 1961.

Type series of Sardinian-Corsican monuments

The temple area is made from megalithic blocks. It forms the entrance to the fountain. Above ground it has a diameter of about three meters and a height of up to 1.5 m and is about three meters deep underground. The anteroom of the temple is not well preserved. A steep staircase does not quite lead to a tholos located 10 m deep in the ground, 5.75 m high . The missing 2 meters of the stairs must have been bridged by a wooden ladder.

On the floor of the tholos, about 2.5 m in diameter, is the access to the actual well shaft, decentralized, with a circular monolithic ring. The adjoining cylindrical part, which widens downwards, has a diameter of almost two meters and is about 12 m deep, before it merges into a much narrower siphon , which is hewn into the rock and leads a further 10 m into the depth. To date the deepest well on the island, traces were found that lie between the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age . The ceramics found range from the 13th to the 11th century BC. BC to the Phoenician period (7th century BC).

Stone graves of the nuragic culture had previously been discovered 200 m from the nuraghe , one of which contained more than ten people and burial objects, including a silver plate and 179 pearls .
