Frank Jones

Frank Jones (born September 15, 1832 in Barrington , Strafford County , New Hampshire , † October 2, 1902 in Portsmouth , New Hampshire) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1879 he represented the state of New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Frank Jones attended public schools in his home country. In 1849 he moved to Portsmouth, Rockingham County, and became a successful businessman. His best-known business was a brewery that would become one of the largest ale breweries in the United States by the 1870s . Jones has also worked in the hospitality industry and banking. He ran his business mainly in Portsmouth and Boston .

Jones became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1868 and 1869 he was Mayor of Portsmouth. In 1874 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the first district of New Hampshire , where he succeeded William B. Small of the Republican Party on March 4, 1875 . After a re-election in 1876, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1879 . In 1878 he renounced another candidacy. During this time, Reconstruction in the former Confederate states ended .

In 1880 Jones ran unsuccessfully for governor of New Hampshire: he was defeated by Republican Charles Henry Bell . In the following years he remained politically active. He campaigned for the expansion of the port of Portsmouth. He also supported Grover Cleveland in the presidential election in 1884 . In 1885 he turned down his offer to become Minister of the Navy . In the 1890s Jones sold his brewery to British investors. To do this, he got into the railroad business and the insurance industry. He was president of the Boston and Maine Railroad from 1889 to 1892 .

In 1896, Jones joined the Republican Party after a disagreement with William Jennings Bryan over currency issues. He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in June 1900; in the presidential election of the same year he was one of the Republican electors who elected President William McKinley in his second term. Frank Jones died in Portsmouth on October 2, 1902.
