George W. Kittredge

George Washington Kittredge (born January 31, 1805 in Epping , Rockingham County , New Hampshire , † March 6, 1881 in Newmarket , New Hampshire) was an American politician . Between 1853 and 1855 he represented the state of New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After elementary school, Kittredge studied medicine at Harvard University . After his exam and his license as a doctor, he began to practice in Newmarket in 1835 in this profession. He also began a political and economic career. Kittredge was a member of the Democratic Party founded by President Andrew Jackson . Between 1835 and 1852 he was elected several times to the New Hampshire House of Representatives. In 1852 he was its speaker . Between 1836 and 1856 Kittredge was also director of the Boston and Maine Railroad . He was also President of Newmarket Savings Bank for 40 years .

In 1852 Kittredge was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first district of New Hampshire , where he succeeded Amos Tuck on March 4, 1853 . However, since he was not confirmed in the elections of 1854, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1855 . During this time he was chairman of the committee that controlled the War Department's spending. His time in Congress was overshadowed by the slavery discussions leading up to the civil war.

In 1856, Kittredge ran unsuccessfully for his return to Congress. After that he no longer held any higher political office. In the following decades he worked again as a doctor. He died on March 6, 1881 in Newmarket and was buried in a cemetery near Boston .
