John Samuel Sherburne
John Samuel Sherburne (* 1757 in Portsmouth , Colony of New Hampshire , † August 2, 1830 ibid) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1793 and 1797 he represented the state of New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives .
Career
John Sherburne attended Dartmouth College in Hanover until 1776 . When the revolution broke out , he joined the American movement. During the War of Independence he served in the Continental Army . He rose to major and lost a leg in August 1778. After retiring from the military, Sherburne studied law at Harvard University . After his admission to the bar, he began practicing this profession in Portsmouth.
Between 1790 and 1792 Sherburne was an MP in the New Hampshire House of Representatives . Politically, he joined the opposition to the then federal government under President George Washington . He later became a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson . In the 1792 congressional elections, held nationwide, Sherburne was elected to the US House of Representatives for the third seat of New Hampshire. There he took over from Samuel Livermore on March 4, 1793 . After a re-election in 1794, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1797 .
After serving in Congress, Sherburne served as the New Hampshire Attorney General for New Hampshire between 1801 and 1804, succeeding Edward St. Loe Livermore . From May 1804 he served as a judge in the federal district court for the district of New Hampshire. He held this office in the succession of John Pickering until his death in 1830. Sherburne was the brother-in-law of John Langdon (1741-1819), the US Senator and Governor of New Hampshire.
