Aaron Fletcher Stevens

Aaron Fletcher Stevens (born August 9, 1819 in Londonderry , Rockingham County , New Hampshire , † May 10, 1887 in Nashua , New Hampshire) was an American politician . Between 1867 and 1871 he represented the state of New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Aaron Stevens attended Pinkerton Academy in Derry and Crosby's Nashua Literary Institute in Nashua. Then he became a machinist. In this profession he worked for a few years as a journeyman. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1845, he began practicing his new profession in Nashua.

At the time, Stevens was a member of the Whig Party . In 1845 he was elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives. In the following years he held a number of local offices. In 1852 he was a delegate to the Whigs federal convention. Between 1853 and 1854 he was a member of the Nashua parish council. Thereafter, Stevens was between 1856 and 1861 district attorney in Hillsborough County . Between 1859 and 1877 he was the legal representative of the Nashua community on several occasions. In the mid-1850s he was a co-founder of the Republican Party in New Hampshire. During the Civil War , Stevens was an officer in the Union Army . He took part in several battles and was wounded in the process. In the army he brought up to the brevet - brigadier general .

In 1866, Stevens was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the second constituency of New Hampshire , where he succeeded Edward Henry Rollins on March 4, 1867 . After a re-election in 1868, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1871 . During this time, his party's battle with US President Andrew Johnson came to a head , culminating in a narrowly unsuccessful impeachment trial against the president. In addition, the 14th and 15th amendments to the constitution were passed, in which citizenship and the right to vote were extended to include former black slaves.

In the elections of 1870 Stevens was defeated by the Democrat Samuel Newell Bell . Between 1876 and 1884 he was again a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives. Otherwise he worked as a lawyer. Stevens died on May 10, 1887 in Nashua and was buried there.
