James Sheafe

James Sheafe (born November 16, 1755 in Portsmouth , New Hampshire Colony , † December 5, 1829 ibid) was an American politician ( Federal Party ) who represented the state of New Hampshire in both chambers of Congress .

After finishing school, James Sheafe attended Harvard College , where he graduated in 1774. As a result, he worked in the commercial sector before he began to be politically active. From 1788 to 1790 he was an MP in the New Hampshire House of Representatives ; in the years 1791, 1793 and 1799 he was a member of the State Senate . He also sat in 1799 on the executive committee of the state government.

On March 4 of the same year Sheafe moved to a successful election into the United States House of Representatives , where he remained until March 3, 1801. Immediately thereafter, he moved within Congress to the Senate ; however, he only fulfilled his mandate there until his resignation on June 14, 1802. His successor was William Plumer .

In 1816 Sheafe ran for governor of New Hampshire. However, he achieved only 46.9 percent of the vote and was defeated by William Plumer, who had run for the Democratic Republican Party . After that, Sheafe withdrew from politics for good.
