Life

Goltermann, born as the son of the musician Johann David Heinrich Goltermann, formed the so-called Hamburg school of violoncello playing with Prell (father and son) and the Lee brothers . He was a student of Friedrich August Kummer and held the position of the first cellist at the Hamburg City Theater , but was also a sought-after soloist. From 1850 he held a professorship at the Prague Conservatory ; Julius Cabisius and David Popper emerged from his cello class . He was then appointed solo cellist at the Hofkapelle Stuttgart , where he retired in 1870.

Goltermann was always in the shadow of his colleague Georg Goltermann , with whom he is often confused, also in literature. Only a few works have survived in print, for example the Souvenirs de Bellini .
