Life

Goltermann's father was an organist, so Georg was introduced to music at an early age. When he took cello lessons from Joseph Menter in Munich , he first attracted attention. He composed works for cello and performed them in many European countries.

In 1852 he became music director in Würzburg , where he focused as a conductor and composer. As early as 1853 he accepted the offer as deputy music director in Frankfurt am Main, where he became Kapellmeister and choir director at the Frankfurt City Theater in 1874 . Goltermann composed three overtures as well as several songs and organ preludes. However, he is better known for his cello works, consisting of eight concerts and several sonatas, suites and duos. In the middle of the 19th century his works were highly valued. However, other compositions, especially salon music, lost their importance because of their sentimentality, but are now popular as exercise templates because of their melodiousness and the natural techniques used for all levels of difficulty.
