Friedrich August Kummer

Friedrich August Kummer the Younger (born August 5, 1797 in Meiningen , † August 22, 1879 in Dresden ) was a cellist , cello teacher and composer .

Life

Friedrich August was born in Meiningen in 1797 as the child of his father of the same name and his mother Dorothea Wagner. Friedrich August the Elder had been oboist at the Meiningen court orchestra since 1796 and was employed by the court orchestra in Dresden, which still exists today, around 1797/98 . The family moved there, and Friedrich August, like his father, initially became an oboist, but then also became interested in the cello . He studied with the respected cellist Friedrich Dotzauer and probably also with Bernhard Romberg .

In 1814 he was temporarily accepted as oboist in the Dresden court orchestra, as no cellists were needed. In the same year Carl Maria von Weber appointed Kummer as a cellist at the Royal Opera House.

In 1817 Kummer became a cellist in the court orchestra, and in 1850 he was appointed first solo cellist with the title “Royal Saxon Chamber Virtuoso ” after Dotzauer had retired. Kummer himself retired in 1864.

In 1865 his son Friedrich Kummer was born.

Kummer worked at the Dresden Conservatory from its foundation in 1856 until his death in 1879, i.e. also after he left the court orchestra. His sons Ernst and Max and the cellists Julius Goltermann , Bernhard Cossmann , Richard Bellman and Ferdinand Bochmann were among his students .

Friedrich August Kummer was known as a chamber musician and solo cellist during his lifetime. He also composed and wrote a violoncello school for first lessons in 1839 , op. 60, which is still popular today. Kummer died in Dresden in 1879 and was buried in the Old Catholic Cemetery. The grave has not been preserved.
