Following on from the historian and genealogist Ottokar Lorenz , who published his doctrine of generations in the " History of Science " in 1886 , Kummer worked out a temporal structure of literary history based on a generation theory. Kummer named Leopold von Ranke and Gustav von Rümelin as further historical models and Erich Schmidt as a stimulus .

In his German Literature History of the Nineteenth Century, published in 1909, Kummer also tried to show that the writers of the nineteenth century had an independent status and were not merely subordinate epigones of the Weimar Classics and German Romanticism .

An overview of the literature of the beginning of the 20th century, where he deals with Expressionism and Dadaism , was given by Kummer in the second volume of his 1922 German Literature History of the 19th and 20th Century .

As a long-time employee of the feuilleton and intimate connoisseur of the Dresden scene, Friedrich Kummer published Dresden and its theater world shortly before his death .
