Career
Charles Atherton was the son of Congressman Charles Humphrey Atherton (1773-1853). He studied at Harvard University until 1822 . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1825, he began to work in Dunstable, what is now Nashua in New Hampshire, in his new profession. In the 1820s he joined the movement around the future President Andrew Jackson and became a member of the Democratic Party founded by him in 1828 . In 1830 and between 1833 and 1835 he sat in the State House of Representatives . He was President of the Chamber from 1833 to 1835. In the congressional elections of 1836 he was elected as his party's candidate for the US House of Representatives, where he took up his new mandate on March 4, 1837. After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms there by March 3, 1843.
In the elections of 1842, Charles Atherton no longer ran for the House of Representatives, but for the US Senate . Between March 4, 1843 and March 3, 1849, after his election victory, he represented his state there as a class 3 category senator. There he was between 1845 and 1847 chairman of the Committee on Printing . In the meantime he was also a member of the Roads and Canals Committee and the Finance Committee, which he headed from 1847 to 1849. After leaving the Senate, he practiced as a lawyer again. In 1852 he was re-elected as a Class 2 Senator to the US Senate, where he took up another term on March 4, 1853, which would actually have run until March 3, 1859. But he could only complete a few months of it because he died on November 15, 1853. Although Atherton was a northern politician, he represented the rights of the individual states, which were usually claimed by politicians from the south.
