Athletic career

The former Chemnitz beer tree began his career in the league in 1950 with the company sports association (BSG) Motor Dessau. He made his debut on the 1st matchday of the 1950/51 season in the away game at ZSG Altenburg , which Dessau won 3-1. The Altenburg then protested that Bierbaum was used without a license to play. Then the game was counted as won for Altenburg and Bierbaum was banned for three months. Only in the 11th league game he could be called up again and then played all league games until the end of the season. In the season 1951/52 he was the undisputed regular player in the Dessau Oberliga team as a right runner . Of the 36 matches played, he completed 32 games. Of the 32 point games in the 1952/53 season, he missed only one game.

With three other players, Bierbaum left Motor Dessau after 88 league games, and in the summer of 1953 he joined the third-rate district league promoted chemistry Leuna . With him he became district champion in 1955 and the team rose to the newly formed third class II. GDR League .

Bierbaum, however, switched to the relegated league SC Chemie Halle-Leuna. This had to complete a transition round with 13 games in the fall of 1955, since the calendar year rhythm was introduced in GDR football from 1956. Bierbaum was used in all games of the transition round. In 1956 he had established himself as a regular in Halle and played 23 of the 26 league games in his usual position in right midfield. SC Chemie managed to return to the top league immediately, and he also won the final of the GDR soccer cup (2: 1 over ZASK Vorwärts Berlin ). In this game Bierbaum was injured and could not participate.

In his first league season for SC Chemie, Bierbaum was able to maintain his place in the regular eleven in the right midfield and played 21 of the 26 point games. Also in the first half of the 1958 season he was used in all 13 league games, whereas he was only called up once in the second half. The SC Chemie merged with the SC Wissenschaft Halle in the course of the season and deleted the addition Leuna from its name. At the end of the season he had to relegate again. After 35 league appearances in Halle, Gerhard Bierbaum retired from the SC Chemie squad and then no longer appeared in higher-class football.
