Maurice J. Murphy

Maurice J. Murphy, Jr. (born October 3, 1927 in Dover , Strafford County , New Hampshire - †  October 27, 2002 in Stratham , Rockingham County , New Hampshire) was an American politician . In 1961 and 1962 he represented the state of New Hampshire in the US Senate .

Career

In 1950, Maurice Murphy graduated from Holy Cross College . After studying law at Boston College Law School and being admitted to the bar in 1953, he began to work in his new profession in 1955 in Portsmouth . He served in the United States Army in 1946 and 1947 and again from 1953 and 1954 . Then in 1957 and 1958 he was legal advisor to the State Senate . Politically, he joined the Republican Party .

From 1959 to 1961 he was on the staff of Governor Wesley Powell . This appointed him first as deputy and then as the actual Attorney General of New Hampshire. He only held the office of attorney general for one month because he was appointed acting successor in the Senate after the death of US Senator Styles Bridges von Powell on December 7, 1961. The official by-election for this mandate took place in November 1962. However, Murphy could not prevail in his party's primaries . The actual election then won the Democrat Thomas J. McIntyre . Therefore, Murphy resigned from the Senate on November 6, 1962.

After his brief tenure in Congress ended , Maurice Murphy returned to practice as a lawyer. Between 1968 and 1988 he was Chairman of the Board of Portsmouth Savings Bank . He died on October 27, 2002.
