Jonathan Freeman (politician)

Jonathan Freeman (born March 21, 1745 in Mansfield , Colony of Connecticut , † August 20, 1808 in Hanover , New Hampshire ) was an American politician . Between 1797 and 1801 he represented the state of New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jonathan Freeman was the uncle of Nathaniel Freeman (1766-1800), who sat in Congress for the State of Massachusetts from 1795 to 1799 . He attended the public schools in his homeland and in 1769 moved to Hanover, New Hampshire, where he worked in agriculture. In his new hometown he was a town clerk and justice of the peace. Between 1789 and 1797 he was also a councilor.

Freeman was a member of the Federalist Party . Between 1787 and 1789 he was an MP in the New Hampshire House of Representatives ; from 1789 to 1794 he was a member of the State Senate . In 1791 Freeman was a delegate to a meeting to revise the state constitution. He also became a member of the State Council . From 1793 until his death in 1808 he was the overseer of Dartmouth College . At this university he also managed the finances for over 40 years.

In the 1796 congressional elections, held nationwide, Freeman was elected to the US House of Representatives for a second term from New Hampshire. There he took over from Nicholas Gilman on March 4, 1797 . After a re-election in 1798, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1801. After that he worked in agriculture again. Jonathan Freeman died on August 20, 1808 in Hanover and was buried there.
