Joseph Buffum
Joseph Buffum Jr. (born September 23, 1784 in Fitchburg , Massachusetts , † February 24, 1874 in Westmoreland , New Hampshire ) was an American politician . Between 1819 and 1821 he represented the state of New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Joseph Buffum attended the public schools of his home country and then studied until 1806 at Dartmouth College in Hanover (New Hampshire). After a subsequent law degree and his admission to the bar, he began to work in Westmoreland and Keene in his new profession.
Politically, Buffum became a member of the Democratic Republican Party . In the congressional elections of 1818, which were held nationwide, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC for the fourth mandate from New Hampshire . There he took over from Salma Hale on March 4, 1819 . Up until March 3, 1821, however, he only served one term in Congress . During this time Spain ceded Florida to the United States.
After serving in Congress, Joseph Buffum was appointed a judge on the New Hampshire Court of Appeals in 1825. Later he also worked in agriculture. He died in Westmoreland in February 1874 at the age of 89.
