Charles H. Peaslee

Charles Hazen Peaslee (born February 6, 1804 in Gilmanton , Belknap County , New Hampshire , †  September 18, 1866 in Saint Paul , Minnesota ) was an American politician . Between 1847 and 1853 he represented the state of New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Peaslee attended Gilmanton Academy and then studied at Dartmouth College in Hanover until 1824 . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1828, he began to work in Concord in his new profession.

Politically, Peaslee was a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1833 and 1837 he was a deputy in the New Hampshire House of Representatives . From 1839 to 1847 he was adjutant general in command of the state militia. In 1846 Peaslee was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the second constituency of New Hampshire , where he succeeded Mace Moulton on March 4, 1847 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1853 . From 1849 he was chairman of the Committee on Militia there . During his time in Congress, the Mexican-American War ended and large areas of the west and southwest of the continent fell to the United States. As a result of this area expansion, there were intensified discussions about the extension of slavery to the new areas.

In 1852 Peaslee declined to run again. Between 1853 and 1857 he was the chief financial officer in Boston Harbor . In 1860 he moved to Portsmouth , New Hampshire. Charles Peaslee died in September 1866 while visiting Minnesota. He was buried in Portsmouth.
