Charles Foster Bass (born January 8, 1952 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American politician . Between 1995 and 2007 and again from 2011 to 2013 he represented the state of New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives .

In the 2012 election he was defeated by his Democratic competitor Ann McLane Kuster .

Career

Charles Bass comes from a prominent political family in New Hampshire. His grandfather Robert P. Bass (1873-1960) was governor of this state from 1911 to 1913 ; his father Perkins sat in Congress for New Hampshire between 1955 and 1963 .

The young Charles Bass attended Holderness School in Plymouth until 1970 and then studied at Dartmouth College in Hanover until 1974 . He became a member of the Republican Party and worked in the following years until 1979 for Congressmen William Cohen and David F. Emery from Maine . In 1980 he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for the congressional elections. In 1984 he was a delegate to a meeting to revise the New Hampshire constitution. Between 1982 and 1988 he was a member of the New Hampshire General Court . He was also a member of the New Hampshire Senate from 1988 to 1992 .

In 1994, Charles Bass was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the New Hampshire Second Constituency . There he stepped on January 3, 1995 to succeed the Democrat Richard Swett , whom he had defeated in the election. After five re-elections, he was able to complete six consecutive terms in Congress by January 3, 2007 . In 2006 he was defeated by the Democrat Paul Hodes . Between 2011 and 2013 he was able to complete another term in the US House of Representatives.

Today Bass is a member of the board of directors of Laidlaw Biopower LLC , whose advisor he had previously been. He is married and lives in Peterborough, New Hampshire.
