Walter I. Hayes

Walter Ingalls Hayes (born December 9, 1841 in Marshall , Calhoun County , Michigan , † March 14, 1901 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1887 and 1895 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Walter Hayes attended the public schools in his home country. After a subsequent law degree at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and his admission to the bar in 1863, he began to practice in his hometown Marshall in his new profession. Between 1864 and 1865 he was also a lawyer for his home parish. At the same time, he was the legal representative of the Federal Government ( Commissioner ) for the eastern part of Michigan. He then did the same job for the state of Iowa from 1865 to 1875. In 1870, Hayes became an attorney for the City of Clinton , Iowa. Between 1875 and 1887 he served as a district judge in the Seventh Judicial District of Iowa.

Politically, Hayes was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1884 and 1892 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions , each of which Grover Cleveland was nominated as a presidential candidate. In the congressional elections of 1886 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the second constituency of Iowa , where he succeeded Jeremiah Henry Murphy on March 4, 1887 . After three re-elections he was able to complete four consecutive terms in Congress by March 3, 1895 . Between 1891 and 1893 he was chairman of the education committee. In the elections of 1894 he was defeated by the Republican George M. Curtis . Between the War of Civilizations and the Great Depression , Hayes was the only Democratic MP from Iowa to have more than two consecutive terms in Congress.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Walter Hayes worked as a lawyer again. He was also a member of the Iowa House of Representatives from 1897 to 1898 . He died on March 14, 1901 in his native Marshall and was buried in Clinton.
