Marsena E. Cutts

Marsena Edgar Cutts (born May 22, 1833 in Orwell , Vermont , †  September 1, 1883 in Oskaloosa , Iowa ) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1883 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Marsena Cutts attended the public schools in his home country and then the St. Lawrence Academy in Potsdam ( New York ). In 1853 he moved to Sheboygan Falls , Wisconsin , where he taught for two years. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1855, he began practicing his new profession in Montezuma, Iowa. In 1857 and 1858 he was a District Attorney in Poweshiek County .

Cutts was a member of the Republican Party . In 1861 he was a member of the Iowa House of Representatives ; between 1864 and 1866 he was a member of the State Senate . He was then again a member of the House of Representatives from Iowa from 1870 to 1872 before becoming Attorney General of the state. He held this office between 1872 and 1877.

In 1880 Cutts was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Iowa . There he took over from James B. Weaver on March 4, 1881 . However, he won the election by a margin of 106 votes over John C. Cook , the joint candidate of the Democratic Party and the Greenback Party . Cook appealed against the election result. In the meantime, Curtis was serving in Congress . Congress did not decide to vote in favor of Cook until shortly before the end of the legislature. He was then able to replace Cutts on March 3, 1883, the last day of the session. But since he was re-elected in the elections of 1882, he was able to take over his old mandate again on March 4, 1883, just one day later, and exercise it until September 1, 1883, when he succumbed to tuberculosis . The by-election due was won by Cook, who ended the current legislative period until March 3, 1885.
