John Henry Kyl (1971)

John Henry Kyl (born May 9, 1919 in Wisner , Cuming County , Nebraska , †  December 23, 2002 in Phoenix , Arizona ) was an American politician . Between 1959 and 1973 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives twice .

Career

John Kyl attended Wayne Prep High School in Wayne, Nebraska , until 1937 . He then graduated from the Nebraska State Teachers College, also in Wayne, in 1940 . Between 1940 and 1950 Kyl himself worked as a teacher at this college. At the same time he studied until 1947 at the University of Nebraska . In the 1950s he moved to Bloomfield , where he worked in the clothing industry with his brother George. There he also worked as a television journalist.

Politically, Kyl became a member of the Republican Party . In 1958 he applied for the first time, but still unsuccessfully, for a seat in Congress . After the death of Congressman Steven V. Carter , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Iowa . There he took up his new mandate on December 15, 1959. After two re-elections, he was able to complete three consecutive terms in Congress by January 3, 1965. During this time, the civil rights movement was the predominant issue domestically, while the Vietnam War came under increasing criticism in foreign policy .

In 1964 Kyl was defeated by the Democrat Bert Bandstra . In the following elections in 1966, however, he managed to beat Bandstra and win back his old seat in Congress. After two more elections, he was able to remain in the House of Representatives for three more terms until January 3, 1973. During his time in Congress, amendments 23-26 to the United States Constitution were passed there.

In the 1973 election, Kyl lost to Neal Edward Smith . Between 1973 and 1977 he worked for the US Department of the Interior . He also worked as a private businessman. John Kyl died in Phoenix on December 23, 2002. He was married to Arlene Pearl Griffith. Her son Jon , born in 1942, represented the state of Arizona in the US Senate from 1995 to 2013 .
