Adoniram J. Holmes

Adoniram Judson Holmes (born March 2, 1842 in Wooster , Ohio , †  January 21, 1902 in Clarinda , Iowa ) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1889 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1853, Holmes moved to Palmyra , Wisconsin with his parents . There he attended public schools and Milton College . In 1862 he took a break from school to take part in the civil war as a soldier in the Union Army . After the war he continued his education at Milton College. After studying law at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and being admitted to the bar in 1868, he began to practice his new profession in Boone, Iowa.

Politically, Holmes was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1880 and 1881 he was Mayor of Boone; in 1882 and 1883 he was a member of the Iowa House of Representatives . In 1882 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the then newly created tenth constituency of Iowa . There he took up his new mandate on March 4, 1883. After two re-elections, he was able to complete three consecutive terms in Congress by March 3, 1889 . In 1888 he was not nominated by his party for another term.

During the next term in Congress, Holmes succeeded John P. Leedom in the ceremonial office of Sergeant at Arms of the House of Representatives . Otherwise he went back to work as a lawyer in Boone. Between 1896 and 1899 he was a district attorney. Adoniram Holmes died on January 21, 1902 in Clarinda and was buried in Boone.
