Viktor of Maydell

Viktor Karl Jakob Baron von Maydell (born August 16/28, 1838 in Hapsal , † January 27, 1898 in Stuttgart ) was a German-Baltic railway engineer and mayor of Reval .

Life

Maydell first studied one semester in Heidelberg in 1858, then from 1858 to 1862 engineering at the Polytechnic in Zurich, where he graduated as a qualified engineer. In Zurich he was one of the founders of the Corps Baltica . After his return to Russia he joined the railway administration and between 1863 and 1872 was a section engineer on the Odessa – Terespol line of the Odessa Railway and a department engineer on the Elishavetgrad – Kremenchug and Kremenchug – Kharkov Railway. In 1872/73 he was the independent manager of railway construction on the Znamenka – Nikolajew railway line. Then he settled back in his home country of Estonia , where he bought the Wiems estate from Reval. From 1877 he was a house owner and city councilor in Reval, from 1880 city councilor. In 1883 he became an assistant to the head of the city and from 1885 to 1893 he was head of the city himself. For health reasons he left Reval and settled with his family in Stuttgart, where he died in January 1898.
