William S. Jacobsen (1937)

William Sebastian Jacobsen (born January 15, 1887 in Clinton , Iowa , †  April 10, 1955 in Dubuque , Iowa) was an American politician . Between 1937 and 1943 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Jacobsen was the son of Bernhard M. Jacobsen , who served in Congress for the State of Iowa from 1931 to 1936 . The younger Jacobsen attended the public schools in his home country and then the Normal College of American Gymnastics Union in Indianapolis . From 1910 to 1915 he was director of physical education for the Turner Society and the YMCA in Clinton. Then he was from 1915 to 1927 a partner in a shop in this place. Between 1927 and 1937 he worked in various positions for the Clinton Thrift Co .; he was also active in agriculture.

Like his father, William Jacobsen was a member of the Democratic Party . From 1932 to 1944 he took part in the regional party conventions in Iowa. In 1936 and 1944 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions , at which US President Franklin D. Roosevelt was each nominated for re-election. After his father's death in 1936, Jacobsen was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC as his successor in the second constituency of Iowa . After two re-elections, he was able to exercise his mandate between January 3, 1937 and January 3, 1943. The last few years of his tenure were overshadowed by the events of World War II . In 1942 he was defeated by Republican Henry O. Talle in the congressional election .

Between 1945 and 1947 William Jacobsen was employed by the War Assets Administration , a predecessor of the General Services Administration ; between August 1951 and January 1954 he was acting head of the postal authority in Dubuque. He died in April 1955 in this city.
