Thomas Bowman

Thomas Bowman (born May 25, 1848 in Wiscasset , Lincoln County , Maine , † December 1, 1917 in Council Bluffs , Iowa ) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1893 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1868, Thomas Bowman moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where he started trading. He was elected treasurer of Pottawattamie County in 1875, 1877, and 1879 . In 1882 he became mayor of Council Bluffs and from 1885 to 1889 he was a postman in that town. Since 1883 he acted as the principal owner and editor of the newspaper "Council Bluffs Globe". He also used this newspaper as a mouthpiece for his Democratic Party .

In 1890 Bowman was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Iowa . There he took over from the Republican Joseph Rea Reed on March 4, 1891 . Since he refused to run again in 1892, Bowman could only hold one term in Congress until March 3, 1893 . After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Bowman returned to his private business. From 1904 to 1908 he was again the post holder of Council Bluffs. He died there on December 1, 1917.
