John Robert Hansen (born August 24, 1901 in Manning , Carroll County , Iowa , † September 23, 1974 in Des Moines , Iowa) was an American politician . Between 1965 and 1967 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Hansen attended the public schools in his home country and then studied at the University of Iowa from 1919 to 1921 . He then worked for Dultmeier Manufacturing Co , whose headquarters were in Manning, until 1962 . In the course of time he rose from sales representative and general manager to president of this company. From 1934 to 1957, he also managed the Dultmeier Sales subsidiary in Omaha ( Nebraska ).

In addition to his role at Dultmeier, Hansen was also an important figure in the Democratic Party . Between 1932 and 1952 he was a member of the party executive in Carroll County. From 1944 to 1952 he was even party chairman there. In 1948 and 1964 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions , at which the incumbent Presidents Harry S. Truman and Lyndon B. Johnson were each nominated for re-election. From 1952 to 1957 Hansen was a board member of the Democratic Party of Iowa. Between 1957 and 1960 he was a member of a committee to monitor state institutions. At the same time, he sat on other committees dealing with the alcohol problem and intergovernmental cooperation. In 1960 Hansen ran unsuccessfully for the office of lieutenant governor .

In 1964, Hansen was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of Iowa . There he took over from Ben F. Jensen of the Republican Party on January 3, 1965 . This election victory was related to a nationwide trend in favor of the Democrats. Many Republican mandates in traditional Republican constituencies fell to the Democrats. Many of these districts were reclaimed by the Republicans two years later. Among them was the mandate of John Hansen, who could only serve one term in Congress until January 3, 1967 . This time was determined by the events of the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War . Hansen's mandate fell in 1967 to Republican William J. Scherle , who represented the seventh district in the US House of Representatives until it was dissolved on January 3, 1973.

Between 1967 and 1969, John Hansen was a member of the Iowa State Highway Commission . Then he retired. He died on September 23, 1974 in Des Moines, capital of Iowa, and was buried in Manning, his birthplace. He had two sons with his wife, Mary Lou Hansen.
