Frederick Delbert Schwengel (born May 28, 1906 in Sheffield , Franklin County , Iowa , †  April 1, 1993 in Arlington , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1955 and 1965 and again from 1967 to 1973 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Fred dick attended the common schools and then to 1930, the Northeast Missouri Teacher's College in Kirksville ( Missouri ). Between 1933 and 1935 he studied at the University of Iowa . At the same time he taught from 1930 to 1937 the subjects of sport, history and political science in Shelbina and Kirkville. He was also a member of the Missouri National Guard from 1929 to 1936. Between 1937 and 1954 Schwengel worked in the insurance industry in Davenport, Iowa.

Politically, Schwengel was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1945 and 1955 he was a member of the Iowa House of Representatives . In 1954 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Iowa , where he succeeded Thomas E. Martin on January 3, 1955 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five consecutive terms in Congress by January 3, 1965 . Since he was defeated by the Democrat John R. Schmidhauser in the 1964 elections, he had to cede his mandate to him. Two years later he was able to win back his seat against Schmidthauser in the congressional elections and then spend three more terms in the US House of Representatives between January 3, 1967 and January 3, 1973. In the 1972 elections he lost to the Democrat Edward Mezvinsky .

Fred Schwengel founded the Capitol Hill Historical Society back in 1962, and was its first president between 1962 and his death in 1993. Schwengel was also the founder and first president of the Republican Heritage Foundation . He died in Arlington on April 1, 1993.
