Asahel W. Hubbard

Asahel Wheeler Hubbard (born January 19, 1819 in Haddam , Middlesex County , Connecticut , †  September 22, 1879 in Sioux City , Iowa ) was an American politician . Between 1863 and 1869 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Asahel Hubbard attended public schools in his home country and then worked as a stonemason. He later attended another school in Middletown . In 1838 he moved to Rushville , Indiana , where he worked as a teacher, among other things. After studying law and his admission as a lawyer in 1841, he began to practice in Rushville in his new profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career. Between 1847 and 1849 he was a member of the Indiana House of Representatives .

In 1857, Hubbard moved to Sioux City, Iowa, where he worked in the real estate business. From 1859 to 1862 he was a judge in the fourth judicial district of his new home state. Politically, Hubbard became a member of the Republican Party . In 1862 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the newly created sixth constituency of Iowa . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress between March 4, 1863 and March 3, 1869 . This time was initially overshadowed by the civil war. There were then major discussions about reconstruction in Congress . A dispute arose between the Republican Party and President Andrew Johnson on this issue, which culminated in a narrowly unsuccessful impeachment process. During Hubbard's time in Congress, the 13th and 14th amendments were also discussed and passed. It was about the abolition of slavery and the granting of civil rights to former slaves.

In 1868, Hubbard declined to run again. In 1871 he was a co-founder of the First National Bank of Sioux City , whose president he was and was to remain until January 15, 1879. Hubbard was also involved in the railway expansion in Iowa and in mining in Leadville ( Colorado ). He died in Sioux City in September 1879 and was buried there. His son Elbert (1849-1912) sat between 1905 and 1912 for Iowa in the US House of Representatives.
