Videferre is a town in the province of Ourense , in the autonomous region of Galicia ( Spain ) with 252 inhabitants (as of 2012). Located on the border with Portugal , its inhabitants maintain customs and manners similar to those of the neighboring towns along the Spanish-Portuguese border. Videferre's administrative center is located in the village of Oímbra , which in turn is part of the municipality of Verín .

Geographical location

Videferre is at 828 meters above sea level and covers an area of 22.22 km². To the north it borders the village of San Millán. The localities are separated by the rivers Búbal and Azureira and by the mountains As Fragas, Buble and Casa da Moura. To the south it borders the Portuguese border and the mountains near the village of Soutelinho da Raia . In the east it borders on the villages of Bousés and Espiño and in the west with the village of Vilar de Perdices, which belongs to Portugal, and the Azureira river, which also forms the border with the neighboring country.

climate

Due to its geographical location in the open field and at an altitude of 828 meters, the area offers the fresh and moist winds from the Sierra de Larouco free passage. Rain and hail showers occur frequently in spring and summer. In autumn and winter there are frequent snowfalls, drifting snow and night frost. The cold climate is generally typical of this mountain region. In summer, again, the climate is quite pleasant.

history

The origin of the place Videferre is believed to be in the 3rd or 4th century AD. The name Videferre ( vitis ferre ) goes back etymologically to Roman times. Evidence and finds from this area, such as the stone bridge over the Azureira river and the stone-made wine presses, confirm the Roman origins of the village of Videferre.

development

Until 1960, the inhabitants of the place, with the exception of a few families, lived from subsistence agriculture. Due to the proximity to Portugal and the Portuguese communities Soutelinho da Raia and Vilar de Perdices, there has been a permanent exchange of goods. From 1960, due to waves of emigration to western Europe, a large increase in new buildings and new houses was registered. A carefree atmosphere was felt in the place. Nevertheless, a decline in the birth rate in the community cannot be overlooked. There is predominantly a lack of young families because they emigrate to look for work in industrial areas.

Parish Church of Santa María de Videferre

The construction is believed to be in the 16th to 17th centuries. In the course of time various alterations were carried out, the last alteration being carried out at the end of the 19th century. The parish church of Santa María de Videferre is located in the center of the village. The parish cemetery, located next to the church, was relocated outside the village. The forecourt of the church was recently completely restored, thus increasing the impression of the spatial width. The church belongs to the archpriesthood of Monterrei .

Agriculture and ranching

Due to the climate and the altitude, agriculture has specialized in the cultivation of rye , potatoes , fodder beet , vegetables , maize and beet . In the lower areas, viticulture is carried out for family needs. Worth mentioning are the fertile vegetable gardens around Videferre, where lettuce, onions , cabbage and beans are grown. An important job done by farmers in the municipality of Videferre is the gathering of chestnuts (called billot). The chestnuts are collected for personal consumption and for export.

Due to its fertile soil and numerous water sources, grazing is available almost all year round and it is very suitable for cattle breeding. The population of cattle , horses , mules , donkeys , sheep and goats is important . Currently the number of livestock is falling, due to emigration and the associated decline in the number of inhabitants. Until a few years ago there was a large herd of goats in the village. At the moment cattle breeding is almost stopped. The main reason for this is the use of agricultural machinery. Due to the emigration of people, the cultivation of the land area is also in decline, with which the desolation of the soil is spreading.

Flora and fauna

The flora of Videferre is varied and rich, but the most spoiled tree in the village is the chestnut ( castanea sativa ). In Videferre you can find very large, centuries-old chestnut trees with a height of 20 to 30 meters. There are also a large number of medicinal plants , fruit trees and an abundance of pine trees and mushrooms .

The animal world is characterized by a large number of bird species. Among the reptiles one can find lizards , snakes and salamanders . In the mountain regions you can find wild foxes , wild boars and, until a few years ago, wolves .

kitchen

The cuisine is traditionally that of a mountain region and is based on typical products from the vegetable gardens and livestock. Typical menus are one-pot dishes with sausage and bacon.
