Wolfgang Lehr

Wolfgang Lehr (born January 22, 1921 in Frankfurt am Main ; † May 14, 2012 there ) was a German lawyer . He was director of the Hessischer Rundfunk .

Live and act

Lehr was born the son of the businessman Albert Lehr and his wife Anna. He studied law and economics at the universities of Frankfurt am Main and Berlin and passed his legal traineeship in 1941 .

After military service, he completed his studies with the second state examination. In 1950 he entered the service of Hessischer Rundfunk under Eberhard Beckmann . As early as 1951 he became head of the legal department , later also legal counsel and head of human resources. In 1972 he was appointed deputy director. When the general manager Werner Hess resigned for reasons of age, the Broadcasting Council appointed the non-party Lehr as his successor in November 1980.

Lehr took up his post as director of the Hessischer Rundfunk on April 5, 1981. During his tenure, the HR television program, which was broadcast under the name Hessen Drei from 1983, was further developed . The fourth radio program hr4 , which started in 1986, was also designed. He also worked on numerous ARD committees and represented the broadcasting community in the legal commission of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). In 1985 he was chief negotiator of ARD and ZDF, which negotiated with a commission of the German Football Association about the broadcasting rights of public broadcasters .

Lehr remained artistic director until the age limit. In 1986 Hartwig Kelm was elected as his successor. On his departure, he was presented with the Great Federal Cross of Merit “for his special achievements in building public broadcasting and defending his independence”.
