Hartwig Kelm

Hartwig Kelm (born April 15, 1933 in Schmalkalden ; † November 11, 2012 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German chemist , director of the Hessischer Rundfunk and honorary senator of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt .

Life

Kelm studied chemistry at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University, where he received his doctorate in 1962; since 1965 he worked as an assistant professor at the State University of New York . In 1970 he became professor for physical chemistry in Frankfurt. Between 1979 and 1986 Kelm was the third president of Frankfurt University, where he established the Foundation for the Promotion of International Scientific Relations in 1983 .

In 1986 he was elected director of the Hessischer Rundfunk (HR) for an electoral period of eight years with the votes of the CDU / FDP majority. In this function Kelm was chairman of the ARD between 1989 and 1990 . He criticized the in his view too strong influence of the parties on the public broadcasting system. Due to a financial crisis at the station, Hartwig Kelm declared his resignation as HR director in April 1993.

In 2002 the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University named Kelm an honorary senator as "one of the university's outstanding personalities".
