Werner Müller-Esterl

Werner Müller-Esterl (born July 13, 1948 in Bonn ) is professor of biochemistry and textbook author. From 2009 to 2014 inclusive he was the seventh President of the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main .

Life

He studied chemistry and medicine at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München , in 1979 he obtained his medical license . In 1985 , Müller-Esterl completed his habilitation in clinical biochemistry and two years later was appointed professor for clinical biochemistry in Munich . In 1989 he switched to a professorship for pathobiochemistry at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz , and since 1999 he has been teaching biochemistry at the University of Frankfurt. Since 2000 he has been director of the Institute for Biochemistry II and the Gustav Embden Center for Biological Chemistry in the Medical Faculty and is therefore responsible for biochemical teaching and research in the pre-clinical phase . In 2004 Müller-Esterl published a textbook on biochemistry, the third edition of which has now appeared.

Scientifically, he deals with the molecular mechanisms that control the cardiovascular system .

In October 2008 he was elected to succeed Rudolf Steinberg at the head of the university. His successor on January 1, 2015 was Birgitta Wolff .

Müller-Esterl is married and has two children.
