Werner Meißner (economist)

Werner Meißner (born April 24, 1937 in Velbert ) is a German economist and university professor .

Meißner began studying business administration at the Free University of Berlin in 1956 , which he completed in 1961 with a degree in business administration from the University of Cologne . He then studied economics at Stanford University , where he received his PhD from the Free University of Berlin in 1964. rer. pole. received his doctorate. This was followed by studying econometrics and statistics at Uppsala University and at the Technical University of Darmstadt, where he qualified as a professor in 1969 in economics and econometrics .

Career

From 1964 to 1965 Meißner was a research assistant in the department for economics in developing countries at the German Institute for Economic Research in Berlin. After his habilitation in 1969/70, he was initially a private lecturer in economics and econometrics at the TH Darmstadt , before he was appointed professor for economic political science at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main in 1971 . From 1992 to 1994, in addition to his Frankfurt professorship, Meißner was also Scientific Director and Managing Director of the Institute for Economic and Social Sciences (WSI) in Düsseldorf.

From 1994 to 2000 Meißner was the fifth President of the Goethe University in Frankfurt. With the acquisition of the IG Farben house from Hans Poelzig by the State of Hesse, he laid the foundation for the university's relocation to Westend.

Meißner was visiting professor at the University of Stockholm (Economics, 1972/74), the University of Gothenburg (Econometrics, 1974/75), at the University of Vienna (Economic Policy, 1978/79 and 1982) and at the University of Toronto (Chair for German and European Studies, 1990/91).

He was a consultant at the OECD Paris (1965), at the UN in Geneva (1966), UN consultant at the government of Liberia in Monrovia (1978), GTZ expert with assignments in China (1984 and 1985) and ten assignments in India (1988-1994).

Meißner has been chairman of the scientific advisory board of the Hans Böckler Foundation since 1995 and a member of its board of trustees since 1996. Meißner has been a member of the Villa Vigoni board of trustees since 2001 and has been chairman of the university council of the Offenbach am Main University of Design since 2002 . Meißner was also president of the private business school accadis Hochschule Bad Homburg until 2016 .
